The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to open the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the character of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
