The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
