The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
