The Global Health Body Sounds Alert Over Critical Lack of Weight-Loss Medications

Under one in 10 people eligible to benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy have access to them, states the global health agency as it issues its initial guidance on the drugs.

Given more than one billion individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is advocating for more widespread and fairer availability to GLP-1 medication.

Per estimates, more than two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidance affirms that obesity is a chronic disease that can be addressed with comprehensive and continuous treatment," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are key obstacles to widespread access to the injections that can help people shift considerable body mass, says the agency.

Skinny Jab Supply Crisis

Even in the present most optimistic case, the supply of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of those who need them, as stated by the WHO.

The advice encourages governments and firms to increase availability, by strategies like voluntary licensing.

A patent on the active ingredient – the main ingredient of a leading brand – is due to expire in several nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Function

GLP-1 drugs mimick a biological compound to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and enhance satiety so individuals reduce food intake.

People usually start to lose weight after several weeks of starting on the regular doses.

Evidence suggests users may regain a significant portion a year later of stopping the drug, because their normal hunger resume.

To be carrying excess weight elevates your likelihood for contracting diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Obesity affects people in countries worldwide and was linked to over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, according to the health agency.
