The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will change against your will as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
