The 2026 cars are designed to be lighter, more agile and sustainable compared to current models.

The world of Formula 1 has unveiled the official terminology that will be used to describe the intricate details of its upcoming 2026 regulations.

The sport is embarking on what is considered the largest rules overhaul in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the required adoption of fully sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which maintain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a significantly increased electrical capacity, requiring key advancements in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

During grand prix events, pilots will tactically deploy electrical energy – including during flying laps – to extract the optimal lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were undertaken with a diverse audience, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which terminology would make things clearer of the central aspects of the upcoming rules.

The stated goal was to render a series of complex technical aspects of the racing as straightforward as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, initial designations for some systems – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the moveable wings – have been discarded in favour of descriptive names that directly explain the real-world effect of the technology.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that racers will have greater control to determine tactics regarding energy deployment, energy recovery, and conservation.

The 2026 rules introduce a set of functions that will be visually displayed on television graphics to improve the audience's understanding of the on-track action.

  • Overtake Mode: This supersedes the current DRS. It provides a surge of additional ERS power available when a driver is within one second the vehicle in front to assist with an pass.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a on-demand power boost from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during overtaking or defending. It grants the pilot peak output at the activation of a control.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be managed carefully, as the available electrical charge is restricted.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the front and rear wings adjust their angles – opening on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and higher speed, and sealing in the corners for optimal cornering performance.
  • Energy Harvesting: Cars can harvest energy with regenerative braking, or during throttle lift at the conclusion of a straight or in sections where only partial power is used.

Car Design Evolution

The 2026 cars will be reduced in size and weight than this year, with a car length reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight reduced by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is anticipated to be reduced by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although squads will undoubtedly recover some as they develop their cars.

Air resistance has been cut by 40%. The cars will utilize active aerodynamics – both wings will adjust on the straight sections to reduce drag and enhance velocity and click back into place for maximum cornering performance.

Pirelli tyres will retain 18-inch wheel rims, but the tyres themselves will be slimmer, by 25mm at the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

Power Unit Revolution

The new power units will have an near-equal balance in power produced by the ICE and the battery and motor, increasing from about 20% battery contribution under present rules.

The hybrid system is made less complex through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the sophisticated and pricey component that harvested power from the exhaust turbo.

All vehicles will be required to run on fully sustainable fuel, produced using plant-based materials or synthetic production methods.
