Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a drab midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.
