Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Major Acquisition for United

The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

Securing the German international comes at a time when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
