Jamaican Icon Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Figure, Dies at 81 Years Old

The world mourns the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican-born reggae singer and actor whose captivating voice played a key role in spreading reggae music worldwide. He has died at the age of 81.

“With deep sorrow that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his spouse Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am thankful for his loved ones, friends, fellow artists and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your support was his strength during his entire professional life … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hit songs including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic sound and positive temperament brought him a vast and longstanding fanbase.

In addition to his music achievements, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film “The Harder They Come”, a role that was highly acclaimed and is considered a landmark of film in Jamaica.

Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of artists, alongside Bob Marley and others, to be honored with the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
