Armed assailants have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an assault against a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The criminal group breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.

The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their hostel, authorities disclosed.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.

Area inhabitants disclosed to media that the armed men then led a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and local protection units" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.

In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have become frequent targets for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge troubling the locality, leaving families in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has worsened considerably in recent months, with educational institutions bearing the brunt of the unrest.
