Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.
An new term emerged several months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to doctors like paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for doctors to treat a minor who has seen the death of their whole family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of child amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in numerous doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being systematically aimed at.
A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce
Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that violations are continuing. Officials has denied these claims, consistent with how it disavows everything it is charged with. Meanwhile, while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, it seems, is what unity manifests as.
Historically, Eurovision prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.
A Selective Vision
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that international journalists are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On While Ignoring Profound Human Cost
Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. An institution that initially championed harmony has now become a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
