Crew Member Reveals Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.
She concluded that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
The team of pioneers also included leaders in different industries.
The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
