British Government Pulls Significant Financing for Mozambican LNG Initiative Following Environmental and Security Fears

The UK government has canceled a disputed $1.15 bn loan backing a massive LNG project in Mozambique, following increasing concerns that the initiative exacerbates the global warming and militant violence in the area.

Government Decision and Reasoning

Business Secretary Peter Kyle announced that the UK would terminate its financial support for the Mozambique LNG project, coming five years after the agreement provoked strong criticism from campaigners over its effects on local communities, safety, and the environment.

“While these choices are never straightforward, the government holds the view that UK support of this scheme will not advance the needs of our country,” said the Business Secretary.

The decision came to light as the scheme's developer, French oil giant TotalEnergies, plans to resume the problem-plagued initiative, which has been suspended since a deadly Islamist insurgency on a nearby community in 2021 caused over 800 of casualties.

Background and Growing Concerns

The financing deal was originally sanctioned in 2020. The government said they had reviewed the risks associated with the project and concluded they had grown markedly since that period.

Originally, the UK's finance body had said the scheme would support over 2,000 of UK jobs and could be “pivotal for Mozambique's economic and social progress.”

However, green organisations have maintained that the African country should be encouraged to channel resources more aggressively in clean power to develop a viable green economy.

Criticism and Calls for Wider Action

The initiative became a focal point for insurgency in the area and was also accused of violating the human rights of indigenous people who were relocated when construction work commenced.

“It has been obvious for years that this project is a failure for the people and for the climate,” stated one activist from a ethical investment organisation. He called on major financial institutions supporting the project to withdraw their support, stating they “can no longer overlook the issues.”

Another prominent environmental advocate said: “This LNG scheme is a enormous climate liability, linked to grave violations. It should never have been given UK public support in the first place.”

They further urged that the UK should instead assist nations like Mozambique by aiding them to adapt to the effects of the climate crisis and put money in their rich renewable resources.

The project developer has been contacted for comment.
